Kerala Court Sentences Man To Life Imprisonment For Brutal Triple Murder In 2017

A court in Kerala on Tuesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of three members of a family in Vannappuram village, Idukki district, in February 2017.

The Additional District and Sessions Court in Thodupuzha found the accused, Shaji, guilty of killing Saramma Thomas (68), her daughter Anu Sara Jacob (26), and grandson Johann George (1.5 years) by attacking them with a sharp weapon at their home on February 6, 2017.

The prosecution argued that Shaji carried out the murders due to personal enmity with the family. Investigators presented substantial evidence, including forensic reports, witness statements, and call records, to establish the sequence of events leading to the crime.

The case had shocked the local community because of the brutality of the attack, particularly the murder of the toddler. Police arrested Shaji shortly after the incident and charged him under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (murder) and other relevant provisions.

Along with the life sentence, the court also imposed a fine on the convict, with a portion directed as compensation to the victims’ family.
