Kolkata Court Sends Doc Ashish Pandey In CBI Custody; Ex-RG Kar Principal, Cop Remanded

Meerapur Assembly by-election

A court in Kolkata has recently placed Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and suspended police officer Abhijit Mondal in 14-days of judicial custody.

Additionally, another doctor, Ashish Pandey, has been remanded to 3 days of custody by the Central Bureau of Investigation until October 7.

During a hearing at the Alipore court, the CBI presented evidence suggesting that Ghosh conspired with Mondal to cover up the rape and murder of an on-duty female medic at the hospital.

The agency cited forensic findings from the mobile devices of both individuals as part of its plea for further custody.

The CBI stated that its investigation into the rape-murder case is progressing vigorously. They allege that Ghosh attempted to mislead investigators by labeling the medic’s death as a suicide. The agency also claimed that Ghosh, with Mondal’s assistance, tampered with evidence and influenced witnesses.

In a separate presentation, the CBI described Pandey as one of Ghosh’s “trusted soldiers,” alleging that he threatened students and accepted bribes for assignments. Pandey, who was arrested for financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital, was characterized as “unfit to be a house staff,” with Ghosh allegedly supporting his position.

Furthermore, the CBI has suggested that Pandey might have been involved in a “sex racket” operating within the hospital. Following his arrest, agency officials began questioning him at their Nizam Palace office regarding the financial misconduct at RG Kar Hospital.

The investigation is also exploring any potential connection Pandey may have had to the rape-murder of the female medic, further complicating the case surrounding the tragic incident.
