Court
The Alipore Court has recently ordered judicial custody for 14 days for all 4 accused in the gangrape incident at South Kolkata Law College.
The case stems from an alleged assault on a student that took place inside the college premises in Kasba on June 25.
Within 5 days of the crime, Kolkata Police arrested the three main suspects—Monojit, Pramit, and Zaib—reportedly in less than 12 hours. The court initially placed these three in police custody until July 8. The fourth accused, a college security guard named Pinaki, was separately remanded to custody until July 4.
On Wednesday, officials announced that the case’s investigation has now been transferred to the Detective Department of Kolkata Police for further detailed inquiry.
The Kolkata High Court has intervened by asking the West Bengal government to respond to three Public Interest Litigations (PILs) filed concerning the incident. The court also questioned why the governing body of South Kolkata Law College has not been included as a party in the ongoing investigation.
The opposition BJP has sharply criticized the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) over the incident. West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari accused TMC workers, employed either permanently or casually in colleges, of corrupting the state’s education system.
“All of these are former TMC workers and are now employed as permanent or casual staff in colleges. They have polluted the state’s education system,” Adhikari said. He accused them of involvement in crimes including sexual assault, extortion, manipulation of admissions, control over college events, and misuse of funds meant for infrastructure.
Adhikari added that casual employees are often shown to work 280 days continuously on paper, after which they are made regular staff—bypassing formal recruitment procedures.
A BJP delegation, consisting of former Union Ministers Satpal Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi, Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra, and Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb, conducted a fact-finding mission and submitted their findings to BJP national president JP Nadda on Tuesday.
Responding to the report, Nadda said, “This report exposes the utter state of lawlessness in West Bengal and the state government’s alarming insensitivity towards women’s safety.”
He added, “From Sandeshkhali to RG Kar Hospital and now this, the pattern remains the same—with silence, inaction and protection for the accused,” posting the statement on social media platform X.
