The Karnataka government has recently announced its decision to enforce the compulsory reading of the preamble of the Constitution, in addition to prayers, in schools, colleges, and universities.
Social Welfare Minister HC Mahadevappa stated in a press briefing that it is essential for the youth to be well-informed about the freedom struggle and the principles and purpose of the Constitution.
”Keeping in mind the freedom struggle, the idea behind writing of the Constitution, the people, especially the youth at schools, colleges and universities — whether it is government, aided or private — should compulsorily read the Preamble of the Constitution,” he stated.
“Constitution has made it possible to involve young people in the construction of the country and treat people of all castes and religions equally. Reading the constitution is also necessary for raising the moral level of the people,” he further added.
The cabinet has also resolved to place portraits of the preamble in all government and semi-government offices.
“The preamble of the constitution should be displayed in the government and quasi-government offices including village panchayat, taluk panchayat and municipal offices. This has been agreed in the cabinet meeting,” the minister stated.
