SC Rejects Plea Seeking Recusal Of CJI From Hearing Same-Sex Marriage Case, SG Also Objects To The Plea

The Supreme Court on Wednesday denied an application by an intervenor seeking the recusal of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud from hearing petitions seeking legal recognition for same-sex weddings.

An intervenor called Anson Thomas moved the application. “The Chief Justice of India (CJI) should recuse himself from hearing this case,” he stated.

CJI Chandrachud promptly responded, “Application rejected.”

Tushar Mehta, the Solicitor General of India, has also objected to the recusal plea. “Since he has made the submission, I officially object to this submission,” SG stated, calling the recusal application an “aberration.”

The Constitution Bench, presided over by CJI DY Chandrachud, is hearing the case. The other members of the bench are Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, S Ravindra Bhat, Hima Kohli, and PS Narasimha.

The bench began hearing on April 18, and the hearing is already on its ninth day.

The hearing on the matter will continue tomorrow.
