‘Maintain court decorum’ Bombay High Court Rebukes Police Officer Who Came in Civil Dress

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday said that all police officers will have to wear uniform while appearing in court. During the arguments in a case, advocate Subhash Jha raised the issue of non-observance of court decorum by police officers before a division bench of justices AS Gadkari and PD Naik.

He claimed, “I want to raise the issue of police officers not following the decorum of the court and appearing in the court wearing all kinds of clothes like jeans.”

Additional public prosecutor Sangeeta Shinde informed the court that the officer Jha was referring to worked with the Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police and it was not mandatory for him to wear a uniform.

Justice Gadkari had then said that all police officers are expected to wear uniform in court. In fact, the judge said that he had fined an officer for not doing so. Since Shinde said that the officer was not expected to be in uniform, the judge did not impose any penalty in the present case.
