Manipur: NHRC Acknowledges Complaints, Issues Notice to State Government

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in India has acknowledged complaints seeking its urgent intervention in the disturbing incident that occurred on May 4, 2023, in B Phainom village, Kangpokpi district, Manipur. According to the reports, a mob took five members of a tribal family from police custody and subjected them to heinous acts. The mob allegedly paraded two women naked, brutally gang-raped one of them, and murdered two male members who attempted to protect the women.

In response to the gravity of the situation, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police in Manipur, demanding a comprehensive report on the matter within four weeks. The report must cover the status of the investigation into the registered FIRs related to the incidents, the health condition of the victimized women and other injured individuals, and any compensation provided to the affected persons and their families.

Additionally, the Commission seeks information on the measures taken or proposed to be taken to safeguard the human rights of citizens, particularly women and vulnerable segments of society, from such barbaric incidents.
