A Delhi Court on Friday issued a notice to the investigation officer (IO) in a case involving gangster Deepak Pahal, also known as Boxer, under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).
Deepak Boxer is alleged to be a member of the Jitender alias Gogi gang’s criminal syndicate. He had been on the run and was arrested on April 15, 2023, following his deportation from Mexico earlier in the year.
The court had taken on a charge sheet against Boxer on July 28, 2013. Special Judge Sachin Gupta has issued a notice to the IO to seek clarification on the charges against Deepak Boxer. The matter is scheduled for a hearing on charges on November 30, 2023.
Delhi police had filed a charge sheet against gangster Deepak Boxer in this case on July 13. Fifteen other accused are in custody, and charges have been framed against them. The case is currently at the stage of presenting prosecution evidence.
On July 11, the Court had declined to extend the Special Cell’s investigation period beyond 90 days in the case against Deepak Boxer. The Court emphasized that the investigating agency is expected to conduct the investigation diligently without unnecessary delays, as it involves the fundamental right to liberty of the accused.
The Court referred to the relevant provisions of MCOCA and noted that the extension of the investigation period was sought due to various reasons, such as collecting certified copies of cases against the accused and obtaining details from the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax regarding the accused’s financial information.
Deepak Pahal alias Boxer had previously been declared a proclaimed offender on December 9, 2020, in this case.
