Meerapur Assembly by-election
Former Member of Parliament Kadir Rana has been recently granted bail in 2 separate cases involving alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct during the Meerapur Assembly by-election.
Rana appeared before the Special MP/MLA Court in Muzaffarnagar, where presiding officer Devender Singh Fauzdar approved his bail plea. He furnished a surety bond of ₹25,000 for each case to secure his release.
The cases, registered during the by-election period under the jurisdiction of Ramraj Police Station, accused Rana and others of breaching electoral norms. These cases were filed separately by authorities as part of the enforcement measures during the election.
Rana’s lawyer, Nakli Singh Tyagi, confirmed to PTI that bail had been granted and that the former MP was subsequently released.
The by-election in Meerapur was significant for Rana’s family, as his daughter-in-law, Sumbul Rana, contested as the Samajwadi Party candidate. Despite her efforts, she was defeated by the BJP’s Mithlesh Pal. Polling took place on November 20, with the counting of votes held on November 23.
This legal development marks a key resolution for Rana amidst the political and legal challenges faced during the by-election period.
