Model Code Violation Case: UP Court Allows Arvind Kejriwal To Renew Passport

A special MP/MLA court in Sultanpur on Thursday granted conditional approval for the renewal of former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s passport, directing him to obtain prior court permission before undertaking any foreign travel.

Court Issues Travel Restriction

A day prior, Special Judge Shubham Verma issued the directive while hearing Kejriwal’s application seeking renewal of his passport. The court ruled that while the renewal could proceed, Kejriwal must inform the court and obtain permission before leaving the country.

Kejriwal’s lawyer, Advocate Madan Singh, confirmed on Thursday that the plea was filed citing challenges his client was facing in international travel due to the pending status of his passport.

Case Linked To 2014 Election Code Violation

The case against Kejriwal dates back to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, when he was accused of violating the model code of conduct during campaigning in Amethi district’s Gauriganj and Musafirkhana areas.

Although a case was registered, proceedings remain stalled following directions from the Supreme Court. Kejriwal is currently out on bail in the matter.

Court’s Conditional Relief

While granting relief, the court made it clear that the permission to renew the passport does not amount to unrestricted travel rights. Any plans to go abroad will require prior approval from the special court, in line with the legal proceedings pending against him.
