The District and Sessions Court in Mohali (Punjab) has sentenced a Ludhiana-based man, Anuj Kumar, to three years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 for transmitting child pornographic content through Facebook Messenger.

The case originated from a Cyber Tipline alert received on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) regarding the transmission of such content.

The Cyber Crime Prevention against Women and Children (CCPWC) Unit of the Punjab State Cyber Crime Cell conducted an investigation, leading to the registration of a case under Section 67-B of the IT Act.

The accused was identified and arrested on January 13, 2022, and the mobile phone used for the offense was recovered.
Nilambari Jagadale, DIG Cyber Crime, emphasized that publishing or transmitting material in any electronic form depicting children engaged in sexually explicit acts is a punishable offense with a provision of up to five years imprisonment and a fine that may extend to Rs 10 lakh rupees. She urged parents to openly discuss their children’s online activities, supervise their device usage, monitor online friends, and teach them to keep their location private. The CCPWC, a specialized unit, is established to prevent and counter cybercrimes against women and children.
