A court in Kollam (Kerala) has sentenced three men to life for murdering a young man living in their colony near Chathannoor by beating him to death, in 2019.
Additional District Sessions Judge P N Vinod pronounced the verdict, sentencing Vijesh (29), Ajit (29), and Ranju (29) to life imprisonment for the killing of 21-year-old Shyam, as stated by Public Prosecutor Sicin G Mundakkal.
As per the prosecution, the trio fatally assaulted Shyam following a dispute over their usage of water from a public well in their colony, which they consumed alongside alcohol. Shyam and his father had questioned the behavior of the convicts and other individuals involved prior to the tragic incident.
Following the altercation between the two factions, on the night of January 12, 2019, the seven individuals implicated in the case allegedly bludgeoned Shyam to death using rods and sticks, as stated by the prosecutor.
Throughout the course of the trial, the primary accused passed away, and three other co-accused were discharged, he added.
Additionally, the court levied a fine of Rs one lakh on the convicts and instructed that if the amount is recuperated, it should be disbursed to the victim’s family, the prosecutor disclosed.
Furthermore, the court mandated the District Legal Services Authority to undertake measures to provide suitable compensation to the family of the victim and assist in their rehabilitation, the prosecutor concluded.
