No Relief for Umar Khalid, Court Rejects Bail Plea in 2020 Delhi Riots Case

Umar Khalid

Delhi’s Karkardooma court on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of former JNU student Umar Khalid, who is accused of involvement in the alleged larger conspiracy behind the 2020 northeast communal riots.

Khalid has been charged under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai dismissed the bail plea.

Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and others face charges under the UAPA and various provisions of the Indian Penal Code, being accused of masterminding the February 2020 riots that resulted in 53 deaths and over 700 injuries. The violence occurred during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
