An MP-MLA court in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, has acquitted Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan in a 2019 poll violation case.
The former Uttar Pradesh minister was accused of arriving at a polling station during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in his vehicle to cast his vote while being a candidate, despite a ban on vehicles within a 200-metre radius of a polling station.
Khan’s lawyer, Mohammad Mursaleen, stated that the then-SDM P P Tiwari had lodged an FIR against the SP leader, alleging that he had driven his car onto the voting campus to cast his vote, which resulted in him being charge-sheeted.
“The trial was conducted in the honourable court, where five witnesses appeared, but the prosecution failed entirely to prove the allegations. The court has acquitted Azam Khan, finding the case to be false,” the lawyer said.
Khan, who faces multiple charges in other cases, is currently lodged in Sitapur jail.
