Pratapgarh Court Sentences Accused to Life Term for Raping Minor Dalit Girl

A Pratapgarh court in Uttar Pradesh has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the rape of a minor Dalit girl in 2017.

Additional District Judge (POCSO Act) Alok Dwivedi convicted Ram Awadh Maurya, a resident of Rae Bareli. Alongside the life sentence, Maurya was also fined Rs 50,000, according to Additional District Government Counsel (ADGC) Devendra Tripathi.

The case revolves around an incident reported at Udaipur police station, where it was alleged that on November 20, 2017, Maurya forcibly raped the minor while she was alone at home. Maurya faced charges under sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, in addition to the POCSO Act and the SC ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, as stated by Tripathi.
