The Delhi Police today said through its Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta in Supreme Court that a preliminary inquiry would be required before registering a first information report (FIR) over sexual harassment allegations.
The allegations were raised by women wrestlers against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
SG Mehta, appearing on behalf of Delhi Police, made a mentioning in this regard before the bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and S Ravindra Bhat.
The mentioning was made in a plea filed by the wrestlers seeking registration of FIR against Singh.
The SG submitted that “Some preliminary inquiry may be needed. If this court orders, then yes FIR can be registered. But we feel some inquiry should be there.”
CJI Chandrachud responded that “You know solicitor, we also don’t do something unless we have some material. Please furnish the material which you have on Friday. this involves a minor etc.”
Senior Counsel Kapil Sibal on behalf of petitioner-wrestlers stated that “We also have an additional affidavit on what has happened thereafter.”
The Court then posted the case for consideration in April 28, Friday.
The wrestlers have been on a sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi seeking action against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. When the matter was mentioned before CJI Chandrachud on Tuesday for early listing, the CJI had said that the allegations raised by the wrestlers are serious and require consideration by the apex court.
