Prof. Ashok Ramappa Patil Assumes Office As Vice Chancellor Of National Law University

Professor (Dr.) Ashok Ramappa Patil has assumed the role of Vice Chancellor at the National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL) Ranchi, taking over from Professor (Dr.) Kesava Rao Vurrakula starting June 10, 2023.

Prof. Patil completed his education at Karnataka University, Dharwad, achieving a B.Sc. in Criminology & Forensic Science in 1993, an LL.B. in 1996, and an LL.M. in Mercantile Law in 1998, securing the First Rank. He further pursued his Ph.D. in Consumer Law under a UGC Fellowship in 2006.

Initially, Prof. Patil practiced at the High Court of Karnataka until 1999. Subsequently, he transitioned into academia and served as a Lecturer at KLES B.V. Bellad Law College, Belgaum, until 2007. He then held the position of Principal at the same college from 2007 to 2008. In August 2008, he joined the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore as an Associate Professor and was subsequently promoted to the position of Professor in 2011.

“It is a great opportunity and there is a lot of scope for improvement at the University. All the innovative initiatives I have taken at National Law School of India University, Bangalore from international journals, book publications and fundraising – I hope to implement at NUSRL, Ranchi as well,” Professor Patil stated.

While currently serving as a faculty member at NLSIU, Professor Patil has mentioned that he is in the process of concluding his responsibilities for the academic year before transitioning to his new role as Vice Chancellor at NUSRL. It is anticipated that he will assume the position by the end of this month, and discussions are ongoing with NLSIU VC Prof Sudhir Krishnaswamy regarding the transition. Following his appointment as NUSRL VC for a five-year tenure, Professor Patil will maintain his affiliation with NLSIU as a visiting faculty member and plans to return to the university in 2028.
