The Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) in Pune has extended the remand of the teenager allegedly involved in a car crash that claimed two lives in the city until June 12. Meanwhile, a sessions court has extended the police custody of his parents.
In a related development, police informed the court that a forensic laboratory report confirmed that the mother’s blood samples were used to replace the teenager’s samples after the accident.
Fatal Incident
Two IT professionals were killed in the early hours of May 19 in Kalyani Nagar when a Porsche, allegedly driven by the 17-year-old, rammed into their two-wheeler. Police claimed the juvenile was under the influence of alcohol.
The JJB initially granted bail to the teenager, son of real estate developer Vishal Agarwal, a few hours after the incident, asking him to write a 300-word essay on road safety. Following public outcry, the police approached the JJB again, which modified the order and sent the juvenile to the observation home until June 5. Earlier this week, police requested the JJB to extend his remand by 14 days.
The sessions court extended the police custody of the teen’s parents, Vishal and Shivani Agarwal, until June 10 at the police’s request.
Hospital Staff Involvement
Two doctors and an employee of Sassoon General Hospital were arrested last month for allegedly replacing the minor’s blood samples to show he was not drunk at the time. It is alleged that one of the doctors was in contact with the teen’s father.
Mother’s Arrest and Forensic Report
The teen’s mother was arrested on conspiracy charges on June 1. Police produced the parents, the two doctors, and the hospital employee before the court after their police custody expired. The prosecution informed the court that a Forensic Science Laboratory report confirmed that Shivani Agarwal’s blood samples were used to replace those of her son’s. The court extended the custody of the doctors and the hospital employee until June 7, 2024.
