Radiation Is Now In Your Body: Madras HC To Lawyer's Plea Seeking To Remove Cellphone Towers Over Radiation Concerns

A petitioner sought the removal of cellphone towers at a hearing on Friday at the Madras High Court, claiming that the radiation emitted by these towers could lower one’s life expectancy.

Acting Chief Justice (ACJ) T Raja argued that the radiations were already in the lawyer’s body as a result of him carrying phones.

“How many cellphones do you have right now? One in the top pocket and one in the lower. Radiations are now in your body!” the Court stated..

After that, ACJ Raja highlighted that cellphones and towers can be found in every nation and region, including Africa, North America, South America, and Asia.

Notably, in June 2019, Justice N Anand Venkatesh of the Madras High Court noted that concerns about the impact of cellphone tower radiation lacked scientific support.

“This Court has consistently held that no one can be prevented from erecting cell phone towers simply because they are concerned about the effect of radiation from the cell phone tower. The apprehension does not have a scientific backing. Until a positive finding is made in this regard, cell phone towers cannot be prevented from being built on mere fears,” he stated.

In that view, the Court granted Reliance Jio police protection in order for it to erect cellphone towers.
