A court in Maharashtra’s Raigad district has sentenced two men to 10 years in prison for raping a woman nearly four years ago.
Principal District Sessions Judge A S Rajandekar also levied a fine of Rs 10,000 each on the convicts, Suresh Lahanu Naik and Vishal Krishna Mhatre.
According to the prosecution, Naik and Mhatre assaulted the woman on December 19, 2020, in Alibaug taluka while she was en route to her daughter’s home along a hilly track. The two compelled her to consume alcohol and then took turns raping her. When the woman’s relatives attempted to intervene, the men pelted them with stones, stated public prosecutor Smita Dhumal Patil during the court proceedings.
Following arguments from both sides, the court found Naik and Mhatre guilty and sentenced them to 10 years behind bars. Throughout the trial, a total of 15 witnesses provided testimony in court.
