Rampur Tiraha Case: Court Records Victim’s Statement after 30 yrs

This is the story of decades ago. There was a Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh. Mulayam Singh was the Chief Minister. The movement to create a separate Uttarakhand was fierce. During this movement, a woman became a victim of two policemen. Case registered. Both the policemen went to jail. The shocking truth is that after a staggering 30 years since the incident, the victim’s statement has only now been recorded in court on Tuesday 25 July 2023.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) produced the victim, related to the Rampur Tiraha incident, before Additional District Sessions Judge Shakti Singh. The two accused, who have retired and are currently out on bail, were also present in court.

The Rampur Tiraha case dates back to October 2, 1994, when police firing during protests in Muzaffarnagar resulted in the death of six people, and several women activists from Uttarakhand were reportedly raped. The activists were en route from Rishikesh to Delhi to protest and demand statehood for Uttarakhand.

The CBI had filed multiple cases against the police in connection with this incident. In one such case, a woman from Uttarakhand’s Shrinagar area appeared in court and gave her statement about the alleged gangrape.

The court scheduled the next hearing for August 2.

It’s worth noting that Uttarakhand was established as a separate state, carved out of Uttar Pradesh, on November 9, 2000.
