A Delhi court on Thursday granted bail to Samir Modi, who was arrested in connection with a rape case.
The relief came with strict conditions, including furnishing a ₹5 lakh bond. The detailed bail order is expected to be released soon.
Previously on Tuesday, Additional Sessions Judge Vipin Kharb had reserved his order on Modi’s bail plea after hearing arguments from both sides. The proceedings were held in-camera, with only individuals directly linked to the case present.
Senior Advocate Ramesh Gupta, representing Modi, strongly pressed for bail, assuring the court of his client’s cooperation with the investigation. The defence argued that custodial interrogation was no longer necessary and that Modi had roots in the country, reducing concerns of absconding.
Delhi Police opposed the bail application, warning that Modi, being an influential businessman, could pose a significant flight risk. The prosecution highlighted that his stature and resources could allow him to evade the legal process if released without conditions.
The case began with the registration of an FIR on September 10. Following this, authorities issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) against Modi to prevent him from leaving the country.
On September 19, the court extended his police custody by 2 more days for further questioning. He was later sent to judicial custody on Sunday before his bail plea was heard.
