A Mumbai court on Thursday has sentenced Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut to 15 days of simple imprisonment following a defamation complaint filed by Medha Somaiya, wife of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya.

The Sewree Metropolitan Magistrate convicted Raut under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to punishment for defamation, and also imposed a fine of ₹25,000.

In her complaint, filed through advocate Vivekanand Gupta, Medha Somaiya alleged that Raut made unfounded and defamatory claims against her and her husband. She contended that Raut accused them of involvement in a ₹100 crore scam related to the construction and maintenance of public toilets managed by the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation.

The complaint stated, “The statements made by the accused to the media are inherently defamatory and were intended to malign my character in the eyes of the general public.”
