SC Asks Bombay HC To Decide On CBI Plea Against Nirav Modi’s Brother-In-law For Travel

The Supreme Court on Thursday decline the petition of Mainak Mehta seeking permission to travel to Hong-Kong.

Mainak Mehta is the brother-in-law of fugitive Nirav Modi who is the businessman of the luxury diamond jewellery.

Nirav Modi is an accused in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case. CBI alleged that Mehta has received a huge amount of money taken from PNB fraud scam and transferring them to himself and his wife’s offshore ban accounts.

A bench comprises of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, JB Pardiwala & PS Narasimha stated that Mehta and CBI might file the supplementary documents in High Court in a time period of 2 weeks so that the plea get decided within 2 weeks.

Further in the order of court, Mehta’s counsel senior advocate Amit Desai has agreed to give ‘letter of authority’ to the Central Probe Agency for accessing the details and also to investigate his 2 offshore bank account.   

The plea of CBI filed through the director of Banking Securities Fraud Branch, Mumbai that challenged Aug 23, 2022 order of the Bombay High Court where it allowed Mehta to travel to Hong-Kong for 3 months.   

The High Court upheld the order of CBI’s special judge, Mumbai, that quash the lookout circular issued in the opposition to Mehta by CBI, and permitted him to go to Hong-Kong for 3 months.
