SC collegium

The Supreme Court Collegium on Wednesday recommended the appointment of the chief justices of four High Courts namely Patna, Himachal Pradesh, Gauhati and Tripura.

The names of Justice K Vinod Chandran of the Kerala High Court and Justice Sabina of the Himachal Pradesh High Court were recommended for appointment as the chief justices of the Patna High Court and the Patna High Court, respectively, in separate resolutions adopted by the Collegium on February 7.

The Collegium has made an additional recommendation for the appointment as the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court, in view of the impending retirement of the judge earlier recommended for the post, whose file is pending with the Central Government.

Justice Jaswant Singh, who is now a judge on the Orissa High Court, was suggested for the appointment as Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court by the collegium on January 25.

The Supreme Court bench led by Justice S K Kaul indicated to Attorney General R Venkataramani during the hearing on February 3 that the government should act soon as the judge is about to retire on February 22,2023.

After Justice Singh retires, the Collegium has suggested that Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, a judge of the Jharkhand High Court, be appointed as the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court.

In addition, the Supreme Court Collegium has retracted its December 2022 proposal that Justice K Vinod Chandran of the Kerala High Court to be appointed as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court and has now proposed him as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.

The Collegium proposed, in a separate resolution, that Justice Sandeep Mehta, who is now the senior-most judge on the Rajasthan High Court, be appointed Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.
