SC Collegium Recommends Appointment Of Justice Dhanuka As Chief Justice Of Bombay

The Supreme Court Collegium recently recommended that Justice RD Dhanuka be appointed Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

On April 19, the Supreme Court collegium made the recommendation which included Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice KM Joseph.

Justice Dhanuka was born in 1961 and attended school in Mumbai. He obtained his LLB and began practicing in the High Court in 1985 in the chambers of his father, retired Justice DR Dhanuka, until he was elevated to the bench in 1990.

For several years, Justice Dhanuka served on the senior counsel panel of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai and appeared in a large number of cases.

On January 23, 2012, he was appointed to the Bombay High Court as a judge. He is scheduled to leave office on May 30, 2023.

Justice Dhanuka will serve as Chief Justice for just over a month.

According to the Collegium resolution, Justice Dhanuka has served the High Court with distinction since his appointment.

“Over the last 11 years, he has acquired sufficient experience on the judicial and administrative side as a puisne judge of the High Court. In view of the fact that Justice Dhanuka has a short tenure as noted above, in terms of the memorandum of procedure, the Collegium resolves to recommend his appointment as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Bombay. In terms of the procedure, consultation has been held with the consultee-Judge/s with a view to ascertain his suitability for appointment as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. The consultee-judge/s have concurred with the proposed appointment” the resolution reads.

The Bombay High Court currently has 65 judges, 42 of whom are permanent and 23 of whom are additional judges.
