Special NIA Court Sentences 28 Convicts To Life Imprisonment

Kasganj Violence

A special NIA court in Kasganj on Friday sentenced 28 individuals to life imprisonment in connection with the 2018 Kasganj violence case. The court, led by Special Judge Vivekanand Sharan Tripathi, also imposed a fine of Rs.80,000 on each convict.

The case stems from the murder of Chandan Gupta, who was fatally shot during a communal clash that broke out during a Tiranga Yatra in Kasganj. On Thursday, the court convicted the 28 accused of various charges, including murder, attempted murder, rioting, and insulting the national flag. Chandan Gupta’s death had led to widespread riots in the region, drawing national attention.

The court heard arguments from both the defense and the prosecution regarding sentencing. The prosecution called for the harshest punishment for the convicts, but the court ultimately imposed life sentences.

The court also acquitted 2 individuals, Nasiruddin and Asim Qureshi, citing insufficient evidence to convict them.
