Supreme Court Collegium Makes Additional Proposal For Tripura High Court CJ, As Judge Recommended Will Retire In 2 Weeks

The Supreme Court Collegium has made an additional recommendation for the appointment as the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court, the court in view of the impending retirement of the judge earlier recommended for the post, whose filing is being pending with the Central Government. The Supreme Court Collegium on January 25 had proposed the appointment of Justice Jaswant Singh, who being the present judge of the Orissa High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court.

Therefore, the Central Government is yet to act upon this proposal. Justice Singh is due to retire on February 22, the Supreme Court Collegium has now proposed the appointment of Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, judge of the Jharkhand High Court, as Tripura HC CJ after the retirement of Justice Singh’s. The Supreme Court Collegium while proposing the name of Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh’s noted that the High Court of Jharkhand is unrepresented among the Chief Justices of the High Courts. The Supreme Court Collegium bench comprising of CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice SK Kaul and Justice KM Joseph observed and resolves for recommending that the court upon the retirement of Mr. Justice Jaswant Singh, Mr. Justice Apresh Kumar Singh who is being appointed as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Tripura The Supreme Court in the last week hearing highlighted the impending the retirement of Justice Jaswant Singh. The bench headed by Justice SK Kaul, while hearing a contempt plea filed over the delay caused by Centre in notifying the appointment of judges had impressed upon the Attorney General for India that one of the pending recommendations which includes the name of a judge who is about to retire in 19 days.

 It has been stated by AG Venkataramani that he is aware of it and assured that necessary action is being taken. The same was being recorded in its order. Thus, the Supreme Court Collegium has now made the additional proposal as the Centre notification is awaited. Further, the post of the Chief Justice at the Tripura High Court has been lying vacant since the retirement of Justice Indrajit Mahanty as he retired on 10.11.2022 . At present, the Tripura High Court only has one judge.
