The Supreme Court observed a two-minute silence on Tuesday in honor of those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for India’s freedom.
A seven-judge Constitution bench of Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, along with Justices Sanjiv Khanna, Surya Kant, J B Pardiwala, Dipankar Datta, Manoj Misra, and Satish Chandra Sharma were in the midst of hearing arguments regarding the minority status of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). At 10.59 am, the bench rose and observed a two-minute silence. Following this, all benches resumed their proceedings for the day.
January 30 is commemorated as Martyrs’ Day, marking the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi (2nd October 1869-30th January 1948).
In accordance with the annual tradition, a circular issued by the apex court on January 25 stated, “As per practice followed every year, two minutes’ silence will be observed at 11.00 am on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, in the memory of those who laid down their lives in the struggle for India’s freedom.”
