Dindoshi Sessions Court in Mumbai has postponed the hearing of bail application of a dismissed Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable, Officer Chetan Singh who is accused of killing three passengers and an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the RPF , court fixed the December 8 for next hearing.
The prosecution requested more time to respond to his bail application.
Constable Chetan Singh is accused of shooting and killing three passengers and an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the RPF on a Mumbai-Jaipur Express train on July 31, 2023.
Constable Chetan Singh’s lawyers, Amit Mishra and Pankaj Ghildiyal, argued that he was mentally ill and suffered from delusions.
They alleged that he lived in an imaginary world and had neurological and psychological problems.
The court instructed the prosecution to submit a reply to the bail plea.
The police opposed Constable Chetan Singh’s bail request in its earlier charge sheet, where the Government Railway Police (GRP) stated that Singh was fully aware of his actions and knew what he was doing.
The GRP based its conclusion on the statements of over 150 witnesses. where they recorded the statements of three of these witnesses in front of the Borivali Metropolitan Magistrate Court, as required by Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
They also relied on CCTV footage from inside the train, which showed Constable Chetan Singh moving between compartments and looking for potential victims.
A high-level Committee was set up to look into the firing on the Mumbai train in more detail which was lead by the Additional Director-General of the RPF.
