Unauthorized Use Of News Videos: Fresh Plea Against YouTuber Mohak Mangal By ANI

Delhi court on Monday served notice to YouTuber Mohak Mangal and Google LLC in response to a copyright and trademark infringement lawsuit filed by Asian News International.

ANI has alleged that Magal used its video content without its permission in his YouTube videos.

An interim order for continuing the takedown of the disputed videos was denied by the District Judge (Commercial Court) Balwant Rai Bansal, instead, he scheduled the matter for further hearing on 26th July, 2025.

History Of ANI v Mohak Dispute

This marks the second lawsuit ANI has initiated against Mangal.

Previously, in a separate case before the Delhi HC, ANI charged Mangal with “disparagement and defamation” for allegedly calling the agency’s copyright enforcement practices and licensing demands an extortion tactic. On 29th May, 2025, Mangal agreed to remove the disputed remarks against ANI in that video.

New Contentions By ANI

The current lawsuit filed in the district court alleges that Mangal has “illegally and unauthorizedly” reproduced ten of ANI’s videos and misused its logo. ANI is demanding a permanent and mandatory injunction along with Rs 50 lakh in damages for “copyright infringement, piracy, plagiarism, unjust enrichment and other wrongs.”

The counsel for ANI, Adv Sidhant Kumar, stated, “I only impugned one video before the High Court in which he is using defamatory words,” specifying that the other videos are the basis of the present case.

Further, he added that although the infringing videos have been taken down, they could still potentially resurface under YouTube’s policies. Thus, he requested a status quo order to prevent re-uploading.

He asserted, “He is making revenue out of copying my content. They don’t dispute they have used my video, they say they are entitled to use. He cannot copy my content verbatim. He cannot copy the videos of my journalists and videographer.”

Response By Mohak

In response, Senior Adv Chander Lall, representing Mangal, accused ANI of “forum shopping” stating that “Similar relief on the same facts was filed at the Delhi High Court and the relief is not granted.” Lall also presented Mangals intent to seel transfer of the present case to High Court.

Decision Of The Court

The court has not passed any interim order yet and have fixed the next date. “I am not passing any [interim order]. I am just fixing it for consideration, and I will be hearing on the next date,” the judge clarified.
