An MP-MLA court in Sultanpur (Uttar Pradesh) will hear on February 19 a 15-year-old case registered against AAP Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh during a protest here.
The court, presided over by Judge Yogesh Yadav, was scheduled to hear the case on Wednesday, but an application for exemption from Singh’s appearance was submitted by his lawyer, Madan Singh. Consequently, the court set the next hearing for February 19.
Sanjay Singh, currently detained in Delhi’s Tihar Jail in connection with the Delhi excise policy scam case, was transported to Sultanpur on February 7, 2024. Following the recording of his statement, the court remanded him back to Delhi.
The case stems from an incident on October 23, 2008, when the Samajwadi Party organized a ‘Ghera Daalo-Dera Daalo’ program at Tikonia Park, protesting against the policies of the then BSP government of Uttar Pradesh. Allegations suggest that SP members obstructed the road in front of the Collectorate during the demonstration.
Consequently, the police registered a case against 98 individuals, including former SP MLA and current SP spokesperson Anup Sanda, then SP leader and current AAP Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh, and current BJP Legislative Council member Shailendra Pratap Singh.
