Wayanad Court Sentences Man to Death for Double Murder

A court in Wayanad (Kerala) has sentenced a man to death in a double murder case of an elderly couple during a robbery attempt.

The Judge

Wayanad District Ad hoc Court Judge, S Anil Kumar, handed down the sentence to 27-year-old Arjun, who resided next door to the deceased Kesavan (75) and his wife Padmavathi (65), who were killed in June 2021.

Additionally, the court imposed ten years of imprisonment for breaking and entering, as well as seven years of jail time for destroying evidence. Arjun was also fined Rs two lakh.

Public Prosecutor

Public Prosecutor Sunny Paul disclosed that the court meticulously examined 74 witnesses, 38 material evidence items, and 181 documents during the proceedings. It was established that the murder occurred during a robbery attempt.

The Case

The elderly couple was discovered murdered at their residence in Panamaram, Wayanad district, on June 10, 2021. Arjun, the convicted individual and their neighbor, was apprehended three months later following a thorough investigation by the police, Paul stated. The trial concluded just last week.

Arjun faced charges under sections 302 (murder), 449 (house-trespass), and 201 (destroying evidence) of the Indian Penal Code.

In response, advocate P J George, representing the defense, stated their intention to appeal the death sentence in the High Court.
