2002 Ranjit Singh Murder Case: SC Issues Notice To Ram Rahim, 4 Others

In a recent development in 2002 Ranjit Singh Murder Case, the Supreme Court on Friday has issued notice to the Dera Sacha Sauda head, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and four others.

The top court bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna has issued notices to Ram Rahim along with other accused Avatar Singh, Krishna Lal, Jasbir Singh, and Sabdeel Singh.

The SC issued notices in response to a petition filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The CBI has challenged in the Supreme Court, the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s May 2024 order acquitting Ram Rahim.

The SC bench led by CJI transferred the case to a bench led by Justice M Bela Trivedi.

CJI Sanjiv Khanna: Since the bench of Justice Bela Trivedi had already issued notices in a victim’s petition, it would also hear the CBI’s appeal.

What is the Case?

Ranjit Singh, the then manager of the Dera Sacha Sauda was killed in July, 2002.

The CBI court convicted all the five accused including Ram Rahim and sentenced them to life imprisonment. One of the accused passed away during the trial.

The High Court had annulled the special court’s order, stating that the CBI failed to establish the motive behind the murder.
