The Supreme Court on Wednesday has established a National Task Force to provide recommendations on preventing violence and ensuring safe working conditions for medical professionals.
In response, the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) of AIIMS, New Delhi, expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the court.
In a press release issued, the RDA of AIIMS, New Delhi, announced their plan to provide OPD services from Jantar Mantar on the same day. This decision reflects their strong commitment to patient care.
The release stated, “The Resident Doctors’ Association of AIIMS, New Delhi, extends its sincere gratitude to the Supreme Court for its Suo Motu Cognizance and recent verdict concerning RG Kar MC&H and related issues. We appreciate the Court’s attention to the pressing issues affecting our healthcare professionals.”
The release also mentioned that in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling and ongoing concerns, a General Body Meeting (GBM) was held on August 20, 2024, at 2 PM and 8 PM. The majority decided to continue the strike. The strike involves the suspension of academic activities, elective OPDs, ward services, and OT services. However, emergency services, ICUs, emergency procedures, and emergency OT will continue to operate.
In solidarity with the residents of RG Kar MC&H, Kolkata, and to demonstrate their unwavering commitment to patient care, the RDA announced that they would provide OPD services from Jantar Mantar starting at 11:00 am. This action emphasizes their dedication to serving patients despite the ongoing challenges.
The RDA AIIMS also called for improved safety measures for healthcare professionals due to the persistent and escalating violence against them.
“We urge for enhanced safety and security measures for healthcare professionals, given the persistent and escalating violence against us. Our collective action calls for immediate attention and the implementation of an ordinance to ensure the safety and security of all workers. We stand united in our demand for justice and comprehensive protection for healthcare professionals,” the release further added.
The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, formed a 10-member National Task Force, including Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, among others, to address the prevention of violence and the safety of medical professionals. This action came in the wake of nationwide protests following the rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata. The court, taking up the case on its own, instructed the task force to submit an interim report within three weeks and a final report within two months.
Additionally, the Task Force has been directed to create an action plan to prevent gender-based violence and ensure a dignified working environment for interns, residents, and non-resident doctors. The Supreme Court also requested the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to provide a status report on the investigation into the rape case.
Furthermore, the West Bengal government has been asked to report on the mob attack incident at RG Kar hospital on August 15.
