Air Pollution: ‘Stop Residue Burning Immediately’, Says SC

Air Pollution

The Supreme Court on Friday emphasized the need to halt crop residue burning in Punjab and neighboring states surrounding Delhi and to seek solutions for reducing pollution levels in the National Capital Region (NCR).

During a hearing concerning the severe air pollution in the Delhi-NCR, a bench comprising Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, along with Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Ahsanuddin Amanullah, expressed concern that despite numerous reports and committees addressing the pollution issue, there was a lack of progress at the ground level.

The bench stressed its desire to witness tangible results in addressing this critical issue.

The Apex Court was apprised of ongoing efforts to control farm fires.

The court is seized of a plea filed in 1985 by environmentalist M C Mehta on air pollution and the issue of crop residue burning had arisen during the hearing of the matter.
