“All Legal Service Committees Will Do Their Job”: SC Judge Dipankar Datta On Pahalgam Attack

Pahalgam Attack

The terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen, has sparked strong reactions from the judiciary.

In the wake of the attack, Supreme Court Judge Justice Dipankar Datta and Delhi High Court Judge Justice Saurabh Banerjee expressed their grief and solidarity with the victims.

Court’s Resolution & Support

Justice Dipankar Datta, deeply moved by the tragedy, conveyed his condolences and reassured the victims’ families of the court’s support. Speaking to the media, he said,

“Our hearts go out to all the bereaved family members. We have taken a resolution in the Supreme Court. We are with the victims, whatever can be done as part of NALSA or any other legal services committee, definitely the committees will do their job. We pray to God that this does not happen again…”

He emphasized that the Supreme Court had resolved to provide all necessary legal assistance to the victims through the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and other legal bodies. His message of support was clear: the legal community stands ready to help, ensuring that the victims’ families receive the justice and assistance they deserve.

A Better Future in Kashmir

Delhi High Court Judge Justice Saurabh Banerjee also expressed his sorrow, acknowledging the pain caused by the attack. He expressed hope for a brighter future in Kashmir, where peace and unity could prevail. He stated,

“I regret what has happened…I suppose that we’ll soon see the dawn of a good day, and we will have our brothers and sisters in Kashmir sharing the same belief which we as Indians share with them…”

Banerjee’s statement reflects a desire for healing and reconciliation in the region, where violence has disrupted the lives of many innocent civilians.

Victim’s Family Requests Martyr Status

As the tragedy continues to cast a shadow over the region, the family of Shubham Dwivedi, one of the victims of the Pahalgam attack, has urged the government to honor him with martyr status. Dwivedi’s wife, Eshanaay, spoke out about her grief and the neglect faced by victims’ families after such attacks. She recalled the trauma of past incidents like the Pulwama attack and the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, where families were often left to cope with their loss in silence.

Eshanaay expressed her concerns, stating, “People forget the victims’ families, such as those in the Pulwama attack, the 26/11 attacks… We don’t want Shubham to be forgotten, and therefore, I request the government to grant him the status of a martyr.”

This heartfelt plea highlights the emotional and psychological toll on the families of victims, who often feel overlooked in the aftermath of such violent acts.

The Pahalgam Attack

The attack on April 22 at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam remains one of the deadliest terrorist strikes in Kashmir since the 2019 Pulwama bombing, which took the lives of 40 CRPF personnel. In the latest assault, terrorists targeted a group of tourists, leaving many injured and sending shockwaves through the nation.

As the region grapples with the aftermath, the judiciary’s response underscores a commitment to justice and compassion, with calls for unity and support for the victims.
