BCI Suspends Advocate Rakesh Kishore For Attempting To Hurl Shoe At CJI BR Gavai

The Bar Council of India on Monday ordered the immediate suspension of advocate Rakesh Kishore for allegedly attempting to hurl a shoe towards Chief Justice of India B R Gavai during proceedings in Court No. 1 of the Supreme Court.

The shocking incident occurred around 11:35 am, when 71-year-old Kishore allegedly removed his sports shoes and tried to throw them at the Bench presided over by the CJI. Security personnel quickly intervened, preventing any harm and escorting the lawyer out of the courtroom.

BCI Calls Act ‘Inconsistent With Dignity Of The Court’

Issuing an interim suspension order, BCI Chairperson and senior advocate Manan Kumar Mishra described Kishore’s conduct as “prima facie inconsistent with the dignity of the court” and a clear violation of the Advocates Act, 1961, as well as the Bar Council of India Rules.

“On the basis of prima facie material, it appears that at about 11:35 am on 6 October 2025, in Court No. 1 of the Supreme Court of India, you, i.e., Advocate Rakesh Kishore, removed your sports shoes and attempted to hurl them towards the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India during ongoing proceedings, whereupon you were detained by security,” the BCI order stated.

Immediate Suspension & Disciplinary Action

The BCI said Kishore’s behaviour was “inconsistent with the professional standards and dignity expected of an advocate.”

“In view of the foregoing, you i.e. Advocate Rakesh Kishore is suspended from practice with immediate effect,” the order said.

During the suspension period, the lawyer is barred from appearing, acting, pleading, or practising before any court, tribunal, or authority in India.

The Council also announced that disciplinary proceedings will be initiated against Kishore. A show-cause notice will be issued, requiring him to explain within 15 days why the suspension should not be continued or further penalties imposed.

Directive To Bar Council Of Delhi & Courts

The Bar Council of Delhi has been instructed to ensure immediate compliance by updating Kishore’s enrolment status and notifying all courts and tribunals within its jurisdiction.

“The Registry of the Supreme Court, Registries of all High Courts, and District Courts shall circulate this order to filing and appearance counters and concerned Bar Associations, including the Supreme Court Bar Association,” the BCI said.

The Council also directed that all ID cards, proximity passes, or access permissions issued to the lawyer by any court or bar association be rendered inoperative during the suspension.

Compliance Requirements

The BCI ordered the Bar Council of Delhi to serve the suspension order to Kishore at his enrolled address and registered email, and submit a compliance report within two days.

It further directed the lawyer to file an affidavit of compliance with the Bar Council of India within 48 hours.
