The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to Umar Ansari, the son of late gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, in a criminal case filed against him during the 2022 assembly elections for alleged violation of the model code of conduct.

A bench comprising Justices Hrishikesh Roy and PK Mishra directed Umar Ansari to appear before the trial court in connection with the case.

It is to be noted that the apex court had granted Umar protection from arrest on January 25, 2024.

Allahabad High Court

On December 19, 2023, the Allahabad High Court dismissed the anticipatory bail application of Umar Ansari, stating that considering the facts and circumstances of the case, the offence is made out.

Complaint

An FIR was registered on March 4, 2022, at Kotwali police station in May district against Umar Ansari, his brother Abbas Ansari (SBSP candidate from Mau Sadar seat), and 150 unknown individuals.

The complaint alleged that on March 3 at Pahadpura ground, Abbas, Umar and organizer Mansoor Ahmad Ansari, in a public meeting, advocated for settling a score with the Mau administration, constituting a violation of the election code of conduct.
