Calcutta HC’s Justice Joymalya Bagchi Appointed As The Supreme Court Judge

The Central Government has approved the appointment of Calcutta High Court Judge, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointment on social media, stating that the President of India had given his approval.

Recommendation Of Justice Bagchi

The Supreme Court Collegium , which is responsible for selecting judges, had recommended Justice Bagchi’s elevation last week. One of the key reasons behind this recommendation was the lack of representation from the Calcutta High Court in recent years. The last Chief Justice of India from this High Court was Justice Altamas Kabir, who retired in 2013.

At present, only one Supreme Court judge has a background in the Calcutta High Court, making Justice Bagchi’s appointment significant for balanced regional representation.

Future Prospects

Justice Joymalya Bagchi could also be in line to become the Chief Justice of India (CJI) after the retirement of Justice K.V. Viswanathan on May 25, 2031. If he assumes the role, he would serve as CJI until his retirement on October 2, 2031 Before this, he will have a tenure of more than 6 years as a Supreme Court judge.

Current Supreme Court Strength

With Justice Bagchi’s appointment, the Supreme Court now has 33 judges, leaving one vacancy in the total sanctioned strength of 34 judges.
