Centre Clears Appointment Of Delhi HC Chief Justice Manmohan As SC Judge

The Central Government has officially appointed Justice Manmohan, the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, as a judge of the Supreme Court. Union Minister of Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, made the announcement on Tuesday through X (formerly Twitter).

According to Meghwal’s post, “In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President, after consulting the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Manmohan, Chief Justice of the High Court of Delhi, as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.”

The decision followed the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium on November 28. The Collegium, which included Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justices BR Gavai, Surya Kant, Hrishikesh Roy, and Abhay S Oka, endorsed the appointment.

Justice Manmohan has been serving as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court since September 2024, after holding the position of Acting Chief Justice from September 2023. He was born on December 17, 1962, and completed his law degree from the Campus Law Centre in Delhi in 1987, before being enrolled as a lawyer with the Bar Council of Delhi. Justice Manmohan was appointed as an additional judge to the Delhi High Court in 2008 and became a permanent judge in 2009.

His appointment to the Supreme Court will bring the total number of judges in the Court to 33, with one position remaining vacant out of the authorized strength of 34.
