Justice Krishnan Vinod Chandran
Justice Krishnan Vinod Chandran, Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, has been appointed as Supreme Court judge.
This significant elevation, announced on Monday, was formalized through a notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice.
The decision followed the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium and received the President of India’s approval. The official notification read: “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the Hon’ble President of India is pleased to appoint Justice Krishnan Vinod Chandran, Chief Justice, Patna High Court, as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India, with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”
On January 7, 2025, the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Justice Sanjiv Khanna, proposed Justice Chandran’s elevation to the apex court. This recommendation underscored his extensive judicial experience and his contributions to the legal system.
Justice Chandran’s judicial career began with his appointment as a judge of the Kerala High Court on November 8, 2011. Over the years, he gained a reputation for his judicious approach and legal acumen. He was appointed Chief Justice of the Patna High Court on March 29, 2023, where he served with distinction for over a year.
Having spent more than 11 years as a judge and over a year as chief justice, Justice Chandran brings a wealth of experience to his new role. His elevation to the Supreme Court is seen as a recognition of his dedication to upholding the rule of law and delivering justice.
The legal fraternity has widely welcomed his appointment, viewing it as a step towards strengthening the judiciary.
