Ceremonial Bench On The Last Working Day Of CJI DY Chandrachud

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud will demit office on Sunday, November 10. He will be succeeded by Justice Sanjiv Khanna, currently the senior-most judge in the Supreme Court.

Justice Khanna will be India’s 51st Chief Justice, succeeding CJI Chandrachud. Justice Khanna will take charge on Monday, November 11.

Attorney General of India R Venkataramani: Recently in Brazil after the conference ended everyone started dancing.

What if I ask everyone here to dance on your retirement and I am sure most will vote in favour of me.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta: Complete impartiality in dispensation of justice.

We were never hesitant in good or bad matters before you.

For govt we won few we lost many but we knew that we didn’t get an opportunity to convince the court and put our point forward.

My lord has always taken a stand as the karta of the family DYC will really be missed.

Sr Adv Kapil Sibal: You are an extraordinary son of an extraordinary father. The ever smiling Dr Chandrachud, your face shall be etched forever.

As a judge your conduct was exemplary and the way you reached out to communities and showed what dignity means to them.

We are in a wed lock bound to values of constitution.

Sr. Advocate Kapil Sibal: Your father dealt with the court when the court was tumultuous and you dealt when matters were tumultuous.

There will be none like you who shall adorn that chair ever again.

Sr. Adv Dr. AM Singhvi: Your energy has only increased in the last 42 years. You exceed the statute of patience.

You always managed to listen to us beyond time. You have done much for technology and modernisation of court like no one else and I had criticised the work which was going on (for corridor AC) and then praised the same. You had also brought us closer to ipads.

You held so many constitution benches, 7 judges, 9 judges and wrote judgments. You must also tell us the elixir of your youth.

Sr Adv Mukul Rohatgi: Lawyers were heard totally and I met the CJI when he was a ASG in Mumbai and I was ASG in Delhi. We used to have lunch behind Apsara pen mart. I hope to again go on lunches with you.

I welcome Justice Khanna and he comes from my HC and the last CJI from my HC was 15 years ago who was Justice Sabharwal.

ASG N Venkataraman: Your temperament shall be known by 5Cs:

Calm, cool, composed, neither critical nor condemning.

You have been a record breaker and do not carry success to your head.

ASG SV Raju: You will be always remembered through your judgments and speeches which were always thought provoking

Nani Palkiwala Law club member: We wish you all the best to the term at the International Court of Justice now

CJI Chandrachud: what ! (To his colleagues)

ASG SV Raju: You will be always remembered through your judgments and speeches which were always thought provoking

A lawyer wishes Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud say that he should go to International court of Justice

CJI laughed and expressed surprise

Shadan Farasat lauds CJI’s decision to increase the salary of the SC law clerks

Senior advocate Shikhil Suri shows a painting of CJI Chandrachud made by his son and compares with ambedkar

Senior advocate Rajiv Shakdher: if you let time pass you can always reflect what could have been done. I think you have utilised all the time you had. You turned 24 hours day into 48 hours one. Little do people understand that there are trials and tribulations for a judge and you do not get what you always want. I wish you all the very best always and forever. Kisi ko muqamal jahan nahi milta, kisi ko zamin, kisi ko asmaan nahi milta.

Senior Advocate Madhavi Diwan: It’s been a great journey with your consistent – yogic demeanour. Mr Rohatgi said no one went away feeling he was never heard, I would say no one ever went feeling she was never heard. Diwan recalls how she met Mrs Chandrachud and asked what the grandchildren wanted to be she said they wanted to be Former CJI.

CJI Designate Justice Sanjiv Khanna for CJI Chandrachud: I never had the occasion to appear before him. He is a vegan but loves samosas and wakes up early in the morning.

CJI Chandrachud: I am humbled by the kind words spoken about me. I don’t think I need to say much. It is a great honor to be sitting here.

I have learned a great deal in this court, having once sat on the last bench.
