CJI Chandrachud Reflects On Judicial Limits: ‘Not Every Injustice Can Be Addressed By Law’

At the farewell event organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud reflected on the limitations of being a judge.

He noted, ‘Some injustices fall within the realm of the rule of law, but as a judge, you quickly realize that not every injustice that comes before you can be addressed.’

He acknowledged that there are issues beyond the law’s reach and emphasized that healing within the courtroom lies more in the ability to listen than in simply granting relief.

He said: ‘I may not always have solutions, but I can certainly offer a patient hearing.’

CJI Chandrachud said the Supreme Court had traditionally been centered around the Chief Justice and that he felt this needed to change.

Thus, committees were constituted as an experiment, which he described as a remarkable success.

In an effort to enhance transparency, CJI stated that a system was implemented to make data on all pending Supreme Court cases publicly accessible.

On his final working day, the outgoing CJI became emotional while reflecting on his tenure. He shared that the most fulfilling aspect of his role was the opportunity to serve those in need, emphasizing that there is no greater satisfaction than helping others through the law.
