The Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud inaugurated a new creche at the Supreme Court on Thursday (August 29). The expanded facility includes a play area, feeding area, sleeping area, and dining area designed to support young children, with the aim of encouraging greater participation by women in the legal profession.
CJI Chandrachud highlighted that the previous creche covered approximately 198 square meters, whereas the new one spans 450 square meters and can accommodate around 100 children of lawyers and staff members.
“We have a large number of young lawyers working here daily and a staff of nearly 2,500 members. The new creche aims to provide a safe and appealing environment for the children,” he remarked.
He emphasized that the upgraded facility is intended to alleviate concerns about the safety of children and to support more women lawyers in pursuing their careers. “I hope other organizations will follow this example and establish similar facilities. This initiative can encourage more women to join the workforce by creating safer working conditions for their children,” the CJI added.
Following the inauguration of the creche, CJI Chandrachud resumed his judicial duties and apologized for the delay caused by the event.
“We dedicated the new creche to benefit the young men and women lawyers. The previous facility was about 200 square meters for 30 children, while the new one is close to 400 square meters and can serve nearly 100 kids,” CJI said.
Earlier in the day, the Chief Justice also inaugurated a branch of the Bank of Maharashtra within the Supreme Court premises. The event was attended by Kapil Sibal, President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, who accompanied CJI Chandrachud. The new creche and bank branch are part of ongoing efforts to enhance facilities and support services within the Supreme Court.
