During his official visit to Singapore on 7th September, Chief Justice of India Dhananjaya Yashwant Chandrachud met Chief Justice of Singapore Mr. Sundaresh Menon.
Both the Chief Justices witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Judicial Academy of India and the Singapore Judicial College of the Supreme Court of Singapore, aimed at advancing cooperation in judicial education and research.
Justice DY Chandrachud assumed the position of the 50th Chief Justice of India in November last year, succeeding Justice Uday Umesh Lalit. His tenure will continue until November 10, 2024.
Furthermore, Chief Justice of Singapore, Sundaresh Menon, who has Indian origins, paid a visit to India in February this year. During his visit, Chief Justice Menon delivered a lecture titled “The Role of the Judiciary in a Changing World” to commemorate the 73rd anniversary of the Supreme Court of India. He acknowledged that the Indian Supreme Court is among the busiest in the world due to its caseload.
On November 6, 2012, Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in Singapore, becoming the country’s first Chief Justice. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) from the National University of Singapore (1986) and a Master of Laws from Harvard Law School (1991).
In 1987, he was admitted as an advocate and solicitor in Singapore, and in 1992, as an attorney and counsellor-at-law in New York, according to Singapore Government Agency Website, Singapore Courts, The Judiciary. His legal career includes serving as a Supreme Court Judicial Commissioner from 2006 to 2007. In 2008, he was promoted to Senior Counsel and assumed the position of the 6th Attorney-General of Singapore in 2010, a role he resigned from shortly before his nomination as a Judge of Appeal in 2012.
