Corruption Case: SC Grants Pre-Arrest Bail to Ex-Noida Authority Chief Engineer Yadav Singh

Jagtar Singh Hawara

The Supreme Court granted pre-arrest bail to former Noida Authority Chief Engineer Yadav Singh on Monday, protecting him from arrest by the CBI in a corruption case. Singh is alleged to have executed 1,280 maintenance contracts worth Rs 954 crore in eight days in December 2011.

A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and R. Mahadevan directed Singh to report to the investigating officer on the 7th day of each month and to cooperate with the trial.

Additional Solicitor General Vikramjeet Banerjee, representing the CBI, expressed concerns that Singh might flee abroad to avoid the justice process.

Senior advocate Neeraj Kishan Kaul, representing Singh, informed the court that the petitioner had already deposited his passport with the CBI.

The bench stated, “With the passport having been surrendered and the conditions set forth, we find it appropriate to order that if the police wish to arrest the petitioner in connection with the case, he shall be released on bail upon furnishing a bail bond of ₹50,000 with two local sureties of like amount, to the satisfaction of the arresting officer.”

On October 25, 2019, the Supreme Court had granted bail to Yadav Singh in a separate money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate.

In 2015, the ED charged Singh with money laundering based on an FIR lodged by the CBI. Singh, who was the engineer-in-chief of the Noida Authority, Greater Noida Authority, and Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority, faced these charges following a 2014 raid that revealed assets disproportionate to his income. The Uttar Pradesh government suspended him after the raid.

In July 2015, the Allahabad High Court directed the CBI to investigate the case, deeming the allegations as highly serious.
