Court at a Glance: Joshimath, Conversion, Marital Rape, Munawar Farooqui and Delhi Riots in Courts today

From the Supreme Court to the lower courts, today Monday is going to be very exciting. Shankaracharya’s petition on Joshimath is to be heard. The petitions filed on laws against Love Jihad will also be argued. Apart from this, which other petitions are to be debated, let us see the court at a glance:

  • The supreme Court to continue hearing on the plea filed by Advocate Ashwini Upadhyay seeking direction to the Centre and the States to take stringent steps to control Fraudulent Religious Conversions by intimidation, threatening, deceiving & luring through gifts and monetary benefits. In his plea, Upadhyay had submitted that Forced Religious Conversion is a nationwide problem that needs to be tackled immediately.
  • The Supreme Court to continue hearing on the petition seeking the court’s intervention to declare the crisis in Uttarakhand’s land subsidence-hit Joshimath as a national disaster.
  • The plea, filed by Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, contended that the incident has occurred due to large-scale industrialisation and sought immediate financial assistance and compensation to the people of Uttarakhand. The plea has also sought direction to the National Disaster Management Authority to actively support the residents of Joshimath in this challenging time.
  • The Supreme Court to hear pleas challenging controversial state laws passed by Uttar Pradesh and Freedom of Religion Act, 2018 in Uttarakhand that regulates religious conversions due to interfaith marriage on January 2. The laws were enacted by the state governments of UP and Uttarakhand for punishing marriages solemnised pursuant to religious conversion. The UP ordinance which was promulgated in November 2020 prescribes jail terms ranging from one to five years for the ones convicted under the same and also imposes a fine of Rs 15,000/-.
  • The Supreme Court continue to hear a batch of petitions relating to criminalisation of marital rape. The petitioners include NGOs RIT Foundation and All India Democratic Women’s Association among others. These appeals challenge the order of the Delhi High Court in which the division bench gave a split verdict
  • The Supreme Court to hear tomorrow the plea filed by BJP leader, Shahnawaz Hussain, against the Delhi High Court order directing that a First Information Report (FIR) be registered in a rape complaint against him.
  • The Delhi high Court to continue hearing on the plea filed by three ex-Indian Air Force officers challenging the summons issued to them in the Rs 3,600-crore Augusta-Westland chopper scam. The three ex-officers have challenged a trial court on July 18 order summoning them as accused in the case and also the second supplementary charge sheet filed by the CBI to the extent that it charges them.
  • The Delhi high Court to hear a plea filed by Former BJP lawmaker Kuldeep Singh Sengar seeking interim bail for his daughter’s marraige. Sengar has sought interim bail for two months for the marraige of his daughter.
  • The Delhi High Court to continue hearing on the appeals filed by the Enforcement Directorate challenging the discharge of former Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran, his brother Kalanithi Maran and others in the Aircel-Maxis money laundering case.
  • The federal probe agency has also filed a plea seeking cancellation of anticipatory bail granted to former finance minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti in the Aircel-Maxis case.
  • The Rouse Avenue Court to hear arguements on framing of charges against Delhi Jailed Minister Satyender Jain and others in a Money Laundering case
  • The Patiala House Court to continue hearing the arguments on charge against Sukesh Chandrashekhar, Leena Maria Paul, actress Jacqueline Fernandez and others in the money laundering case relating to the duping of a businessman’s wife of ₹200 crores by Chandrashekhar.
