A 6-member delegation of Supreme Court judges, led by Justice BR Gavai, will visit relief camps in violence-affected Manipur on March 22 to enhance legal and humanitarian support for Internally Displaced Persons.
Legal & Medical Support Initiatives
The delegation includes Justices Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, MM Sundresh, KV Viswanathan, and N Kotishwar. Justice Gavai, who is also the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), will virtually inaugurate legal aid clinics and legal and medical service camps across all districts, including new facilities in Imphal East, Imphal West, and Ukhrul.
The legal services camps aim to help IDPs access government welfare schemes, including healthcare, pensions, employment benefits, and identity document reconstruction.
“Each participating state department will outline at least five key schemes tailored to address the needs of the displaced population,” NALSA stated.
A team of 25 specialized doctors from Chennai will conduct medical camps in relief shelters. Their services will continue for 6 days, providing medical treatment and essential medicines to displaced families.
Ongoing Legal Assistance
Since the outbreak of violence, NALSA and the Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA) have established 273 special legal aid clinics in relief camps. These clinics assist IDPs in availing government benefits, retrieving lost documents, and accessing medical aid.
“This visit underscores NALSA’s commitment to justice, ensuring every displaced person receives the support needed to rebuild their lives with dignity,” NALSA stated.
Manipur Violence Background
Manipur witnessed large-scale violence between the Hindu Meitei and Christian Kuki communities following a rally by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3, 2023. The situation escalated, prompting the deployment of paramilitary forces to restore order.
Court judges’ visit coincides with the Duo Decennial Celebration of the High Court of Manipur and is expected to reinforce judicial and humanitarian efforts in the region.
