Delhi Excise Policy: SC to Hear BRS Leader K Kavitha’s Pleas on Aug 12

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on August 12 (Monday) the pleas filed by BRS leader K Kavitha, challenging the Delhi High Court’s verdict that denied her bail in corruption and money laundering cases linked to the alleged excise policy scam.

On July 1, the Delhi high court had dismissed Kavitha’s bail pleas, stating that she was prima facie one of the main conspirators in the criminal conspiracy related to the formation and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22.

As per the cause list for August 12, uploaded on the apex court’s website, a bench of Justices B.R. Gavai and K.V. Viswanathan is set to hear her petitions.

The Delhi high court, in dismissing her bail pleas, stated that no case for granting regular bail had been made at this time due to the investigation being at a crucial stage. The court rejected her plea for relief on the grounds of her gender, asserting that as a well-educated individual and former MP, she could not be equated to a vulnerable female, and the court could not overlook the “serious allegations” against her.

The court expressed the opinion that K Kavitha was prima facie one of the main conspirators in the criminal conspiracy related to the formulation and implementation of the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22. It noted that the material collected by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) indicated that Kavitha was one of the principal conspirators in the entire scheme concerning the policy’s formulation and implementation.
